Shockingly, we found only 30% of the items in the recycling bins could be recycled

We have recently completed a thorough sustainability audit for one of our clients. During the audit, we inspected the contents of their 8 recycling bins, each with a capacity of 240 litres. Our findings revealed that only 30% of the materials present in these bins were actually recyclable. The remaining 70% consisted of non-recyclable items, with plastic bags and non-biodegradable antiseptic wipes being the main offenders.

In total, we found 121 plastic bags and piles of non-biodegradable antiseptic wipes in the bins.

These items accounted for a significant portion of the waste present in the bins. We also noticed that some of the recyclable items, such as paper, cardboard, and plastic bottles, were contaminated with food waste, which made them non-recyclable.

Educating staff on waste disposal and recycling can reduce environmental impact and promote sustainability.

Given these findings, we have recommended that our client take steps to reduce the use of plastic bags and antiseptic wipes and improve their waste management practices. We have also suggested that they educate their staff on proper waste disposal and recycling practices. By doing so, they can significantly reduce their environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable future.
